Painter, author and playwright – Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) played on many strings. His many-faceted and dramatic personality and life has left a large impact and made him a trademark in culture industry. Inspired by Sigmund Freud and the new science of psychoanalysis, his paintings depict surreal worlds and scenes filled with otherworldly creatures and objects. When he was just 16 years old, his mother died from cancer, leaving a scar and representing such an insult from life itself upon young Dali, which only could be healed by achieving fame, as he later in life wrote. In his late 20’s, Freuds theories on dreams and the mind inspired Dali to journeying into himself, analyzing past events, experiences and dreams. Dali linked all of this to unconscious life of the mind, paving way for a metaphysical approach with art exploring perception in relation to dreams and inner urges.
